Camping Near Pittsburgh, PA

Rivers Crossing Campground & Marina Is About Six Hours From Pittsburgh. Here's How to Make That Worth It.

Straight talk first: Rivers Crossing Campground and Marina isn't near Pittsburgh. It's roughly six hours northeast, depending on the route, which makes it a long-weekend trip, not a quick one.

Pittsburgh sits where the Allegheny and Monongahela meet to form the Ohio, so you probably already know your way around a river. A marina on the Clyde River, connected to the historic Erie Canal system, is a different kind of water, and that difference is the whole reason to make the drive.

This page is for campers who are weighing that trade. It walks through the real math of a six-hour trip, the two ways to drive it, and what you're driving toward, so you can decide before you load the rig.

The Honest Math of a Six-Hour Drive

The drive costs the same no matter how long you stay, so the length of the trip matters more than anything else you plan.

Two nights works if all you want is a change of scenery. Three or four nights is where the drive starts to pay off, especially if you build the trip around a themed weekend.

Two Ways to Drive It

Mapping apps will usually offer more than one route from Pittsburgh, and they fall into two families that feel very different. [Compare current drive times and tolls for your departure day.]

Across central Pennsylvania and up through the Southern Tier. This route heads east through central Pennsylvania, then north into New York near Elmira before reaching the Finger Lakes. It trades highway speed for hills, forests, and gorges, and it puts the best stops late in the drive, close to the campground. Our Elmira page covers the Southern Tier stretch.

North to Erie, then east on the Thruway. The other family heads north to Erie and joins the Thruway, the same corridor described on our Erie page. It adds tolls in New York, so check current rates before you go.

Stops worth making on the central route

  • Pine Creek Gorge, north-central Pennsylvania. Often called the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. It's a detour off the main route, so budget real time.

  • Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, NY. A good break on the Southern Tier approach, and a solid rainy-day option once you're settled.

  • Watkins Glen State Park, NY. A gorge trail at the south end of Seneca Lake, close enough to work as a Saturday outing instead of a travel stop.

What You're Driving Toward

  • Different water. The marina sits on the Clyde River and connects to the Erie Canal system, with Cayuga and Seneca Lakes beyond. For a river person, that's a different trip, not a longer version of the one you already take.

  • Themed weekends. Rivers Crossing Campground & Marina is a themed-weekend campground, which gives a long drive a destination worth the miles.

  • A wildlife refuge nearby. Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge sits close to the campground and draws migrating birds in spring and fall.

  • Boat trailer storage. If you're towing a boat, storage is available.

  • RV and tent camping.

  • A seasonal schedule. Rivers Crossing Campground & Marina is open roughly May through October.

Is it worth driving six hours for a weekend?

For a two-night trip, probably not: you'd spend about twelve hours driving for one full day at the campground.
